Snake Plant

Dracaena trifasciata · Houseplant

Stiff, upright leaves and an almost unbreakable reputation. It handles low light, dry air and long gaps between waterings; what it can't handle is wet soil for weeks on end.

When?

Repot or divide in spring or summer. It grows all year indoors but slows in winter, so water even less then.

Step by step

  1. Choose a heavy pot only a little wider than the roots, with drainage.
  2. Use cactus mix or potting soil with plenty of grit.
  3. Plant at the same depth; firm the soil so tall leaves stay upright.
  4. Water deeply, then wait until the soil is completely dry.
  5. Place anywhere from a dim corner to a bright window.
  6. Feed two or three times in spring and summer at half strength.
  7. Divide crowded clumps by cutting through the rhizome.
