Rosemary

Salvia rosmarinus · Herb

A woody, fragrant herb from dry, sunny hillsides. It thrives on neglect more than on attention: lean soil, lots of sun and sparse watering. In mild winters it stays outdoors all year; in cold areas a pot makes it easy to move inside.

When?

Plant out in spring after the last frost, once the soil has warmed. Cuttings root best in late spring or early summer. In cold-winter areas bring pots indoors before the first hard frost (estimated).

Step by step

  1. Buy a young plant or root 4 in cuttings in a gritty mix; seed is slow and uneven.
  2. Plant in the sunniest, best-drained spot you have; add grit to heavy soil.
  3. Water regularly for the first few weeks, then only when the soil is dry a few inches down.
  4. Skip rich fertilizer; a light feed in spring is plenty.
  5. Snip sprig tips often to keep the plant bushy; avoid cutting into bare old wood.
  6. Prune lightly after flowering to keep a compact shape.
  7. Indoors in winter, give it the brightest window and a cool room.
